Dr. Tomaž Kmecl, a mechanical engineering PhD, has combined a decade of experience managing complex projects abroad, along with the Swiss work ethic, discipline and perseverance, with Slovenian engineering innovation. Under his leadership, Kolektor Etra is contributing to electrification, the sustainable transition and greater energy independence in Europe through its advanced transformer technology.
Kolektor Etra’s growth and development gained fresh momentum following the company’s entry into the Kolektor Group. When Dr. Kmecl took over the company’s leadership in 2009, it employed 200 people; by the end of 2025, that number had risen to 627. Today, more than 93 percent of Kolektor Etra’s revenue is generated in foreign markets. Revenue increased from €133 million in 2020 to nearly €370 million in 2025, while over the past three years the company has achieved an average annual sales growth rate of 27 percent.

This growth has been accompanied by outstanding business results. Over the same period, net profit increased from just over €9 million to €118 million, while EBITDA rose from €14 million to €145 million. In 2025, value added per employee reached a record €294,000, return on equity stood at 77 percent, and the EBIT margin reached 39 percent.
Dr. Tomaž Kmecl, CEO of Kolektor Etra, said: “Our success is based on four key factors. The first is the ability to identify opportunities and respond appropriately to changing circumstances; the second is the development of the right, high-quality end products with high added value; and the third is successfully marketing these products at the right price. Equally important is the company’s internal culture, which is based on respectful communication, clear responsibilities, high-quality leadership and shared goals. Going forward, we will continue to expand our business, particularly in the US market, where we see significant potential. Electrification, the green transition and the rapid development of data centres driven by artificial intelligence are increasing the demand for reliable energy infrastructure. We aim to continue ensuring the safe and efficient transmission of energy from source to end user.”
Dr. Kmecl’s colleagues describe him as a decisive, consistent and credible leader who inspires trust. His leadership style is based on clear standards of accountability, open communication, fast yet considered decision-making, and the systematic development of talent and future successors.
Kolektor Etra combines business success with a strong commitment to its employees, the environment and sustainable development. One-third of its materials are sourced from suppliers located within a 500-kilometre radius. The company supports science, student competitions and local sports, and through humanitarian organisations provides assistance to employees and their families in difficult circumstances.
The Manager of the Year award confirms that Slovenian expertise, dedicated employees and decisive leadership can create a globally successful company.
